It's a very special movie, and not necessarily for the only reason that some remember the film mostly for. Der blaue Engel became, like most of von Sternberg's films, an autobiographical excursion. When they decide to get married, their plans are opposed by Jost's family and his superiors in the army and he is denied permission to wed Lili. The meeting with the 25-year-old married woman was the beginning of a life-long sexual obsession for von Sternberg, as well as the end of his marriage and the foundation of his true career.
